AIM on TMO BlackBerry

Instructions are involved: must “restore” the Service Book and install the clients for AIM, ICQ, and MSN (can select which to install).

After all this, it doesn’t actually work because TMO has elected to block the clients from connecting (and is not providing their own service books). Probably to preserve “per message” (SMS) revenue stream.

Use Squeezebox as wireless bridge

As discussed at the bottom of the Network Design for Squeezebox page, the Slim Devices SB3 (maybe other models as well) can act as a wireless bridge for a wired network device. In my case, I have a network printer connected to the SB3’s wired Ethernet port and the SB3 connects to the wireless network in my situation. Continue reading ‘Use Squeezebox as wireless bridge’

Ed Markey’s BC Law 2007 Commencement Speech

From Wall Street Journal editorial page (blogged here):

You must find some ways to use your training to comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable.

eBeam Interactive Whiteboard

While the Luidia eBeam interactive whiteboard system certainly works, its value and usefulness is the subject of some debate. I have found that it does work as advertised, but the incremental difficulty of setting it up and using it prevents it from being used often. It does make an impression on people the first time they see it in action, and is fun to demo. An Interactive Whiteboard for Collaboration?

My team is distributed across the US and various sites in Europe. Pervasive email, cheap telecom, and WAN/Internet connectivity have made it possible for us to be effective, but we have not yet found a way to successfully facilitate the creative process beyond physically meeting. As a lead, I am always interested in technologies/gadgets that may reduce our otherwise prodigious appetite for plane tickets and hotel rooms. Boris Yeltsin’s Farewell Speech

Found in the Economist, April 28, 2007 obituary for Boris Yeltsin:

I ask you to forgive me for not fulfilling the hopes of those people who believed that we would be able to jump from the grey, stagnating, totalitarian past into a bright, rich, and civilised future in one go. I myself believed in this. But it could not be done in one fell swoop…I am leaving. I have done everything I could…In saying farewell, I wish to say to each of you the following. be happy. You deserve happiness. You deserve happiness and peace.

Understanding the Garmin 60CSx Track Log

Earlier Garmin GPS units

Store timestamped track points only for internal “Active Log”. The coordinate points (“breadcrumbs”) are retained when the internal log is stored (in whole or in part) as one of the 10-20 “stored” tracks. Sadly, the timestamps for each point are discarded when the track is saved, thus users interested in “geotagging” their photographs will be out of luck if they “save” their track log (saved tracks contain only the starting timestamp).

New Garmin units with MicroSD/Transflash storage

Have an option to automatically save the “Active Log” in both the unit (same as older models) and concurrently on the data card. Enabled data card storage from the Tracks screen: Setup -> Data Card -> Log Track To Data Card.

The unit saves each track point in both the standard internal log and also to the root directory of the data card using a file named using the day’s date (YYYYMMDD.gpx). A new file is created each day, and old files must be removed manually (using unit interface or PC). Both the internal and data card logs contain the same new “Active Log” tracks created when the unit loses reception (e.g. “Active Log 001″, “Active Log 002″, etc.).

Exploiting the new features:

  • The card and internal log are both updated with each new track point
  • Points cannot be deleted from the data card
  • Points on the data card cannot be viewed using the Map or TracBack-ed like internal tracks. It seems the unit cannot do anything with the logged points on the card (maybe a good feature for future firmware…)
  • The internal “Active Log” can be saved, renamed, or deleted without changing the contents of the log on the data card. The points on the data card always contain full timestamps no matter what happens to the internal log (good for geotaggers)
  • The .gpx files on the data card can only be accessed by mounting the card (using the device’s USB mode or removing the card and reading it in another reader)

GPS Receiver

Selected Garmin 60CSx (manual), based on:

  • Best-in-class reception, uses SiRFSTARIII chipset
  • IPX7 Waterproof
  • Map/navigation capability
  • Use of standard MicroSD/Transflash removable storage (inexpensive 2GB cards available)
  • Can use WAAS to supplement accuracy
  • 18 hour battery life

Garmin maps are available (map sizes)
